Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils and aquifers: can microbes provide solutions?
Meet Professor Stefan Bertilsson and PhD student Nicola Messinger from SLU, institute of water and environment.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of over 10 000 anthropogenic compounds used in such as Teflon, grease resistant paper, water resistant clothing and firefighting foam. Although useful, these substances have shown to be carcinogenic at low concentrations and have therefore become of high concern. In Sweden, PFAS pollution has been discovered in over 2000 sites. Microbial degradation of PFAS under specific conditions in laboratory studies has recently been discovered. Stefan and Nicola’s project aims to improve the knowledge on the organisms involved in PFAS degradation. Join us this Friday to learn more!
